Excursion 2: June 2

Today we went to Covadonga and Los Lagos de Covadonga and it was so beautiful.  This is located in the National Park in Spain, Los Picos de Europa.  In my Spanish Class this year I did a report on this park so I really enjoyed seeing the sites there.  When we got off the bus we arrived at this gorgeous cathedral located right in the middle of the mountains!  The views were unbelievable.

We had an hour to explore the area and after we went through the cathedral, we headed over the cave.  When you walk into the cave it is pretty dark and there are candles all over the place. At the end of the cave is where they do the service and it opens up to the outside.  The service is every hour and it was pretty neat to sit there for a few minutes to hear it.

This is the cave from a distance

Below the service area there is a beautiful river; in the river people throw coins in there and make wishes and there is also a fountain down there.  The legend of the fountain is if you drink from all seven of the different waters you will be married within the next year.  We are testing the theory out and a few girls drank from all seven, but don't worry I didn't(:

The color of the water was amazing

We then started to head up to the lakes on the bus; it was a pretty miserable ride.  The road was so steep and winding that people were starting to feel sick.  When we started to reach high elevations you couldn't see anything because of the fog, it was a little terrifying.  The road was not big enough for two cars to pass and we came across another bus.  It took awhile to figure it out how to pass each other but we finally did.  I felt bad for the bus driver.  Once we reached the top we headed to the lake and the fog was very heavy. We reached the path fine though because it was paved.  The lake was pretty uneventful because you could only see a few feet in front of you.  In Los Picos de Europa cows just roam around and you aren't suppose to touch them because they aren't nice.  It was very interesting to just see a bunch of random cows.  A few of them actually came a couple feet away from our group.

Lake time but not really
The ride down the mountain was not as bad as going up it.  After the lake we headed to the city of Ribadesella and had free time again.  We of course went to the beach but it was a little chilly outside so we didn't even change into our suits.  We ended up just sleeping on the beach for an hour! It was quite an adventure(:
